Interpretin' in the Subway

Do one thing every now and then that scares you. I faced my fear of and aversion to other people by going to the subway beside a sign that said "Free Dream Interpretation"

It was like a book, or a bad poem or a dream. I sat there against a wall with my sign, mostly unnoticed. Every now and then, someone would stop by and look. It was the same almost every time. I asked "Do you have a dream I can interpret?" and they'd stop and think then say "Well, there was this one..." and I'd explain the elements of it to them. Every time they were (or at least pretended to be) completely blown away. They said that it made sense in the context of things that were going on.

Fifteen dreams interpreted. Most of the people that stopped by were men. Men of color, in fact. I only had three women total stop by. One was a mom. Oh, and there was a lady who stopped beside me with her son. They went on whispering for a long time. finally, he went over and handed me a dollar, explaining "She's too scared to find out what it means" and left before I could say anything else. Dang.

Just like some kind of short story a person would write for NPR. A little unobtrusive child-looking entity sits in the 42nd street subway. Most people pass him or her by, but every now and then, someone stops and what he says blows their minds. The little entity has something useful to offer, but most people don't know that.

They'd blast that story in a literature forum. "Ohhh, way to be heavy handed with the metaphor about people not seeing what's good for them right under their noses! Boooo, go back to fanfiction dot net! Boooo."

At the end of the day, I had $44.57. Not bad. I'd like to be able to do more actual interpreting, though. Hope more people stop by next time. I need to make my sign bigger.

But I'm not the one with the degree in writing! You are! I just make the scenarios. Remember?

You are fucking amazing.

And yes to what Oz says. DO IT. Both of you. I'll read it.

Aw, Nikki <3

But I remember your writing in school and I'd much rather give the idea to you. Your essay in Dr. Belmont's class about the spiders was about the closest thing I could ever get to wanting to know what a baby wolf spider looks like.

I think that'd be an awesome story. Maybe you could do it a couple more times, to get more material.

I don't recall most of my dreams. One that has stuck involved a bar-room brawl in a Star Wars setting; lots of different Star Wars species beating the hell out of each other. Soon, all of the lights go out, and soon after, silence. The lights come back on, and everyone in the bar is unconscious except for the group of 5 Wookiees, who give their gutteral cheers while raising and bobbing their fists up and down.

(I am having one of those days where I can't quite do anything with my words.)
